"Amendment
08-B" If adopted by a majority (87) of the 173 presbyteries,
it would replace G-6.0106b. The question to be voted on is:
"Shall the current text of G-6.0106b be stricken and new text
be inserted to read as follows: [Text to be deleted is shown with

G-6.0106 b. Those who are called to office in the church
are to lead a life in obedience to Scripture and in conformity
to the historic confessional standards of the church. Among
these standards is the requirement to live either in fidelity
within the covenant of marriage between a man and a woman (W-4.9001),
or chastity in singleness. Persons refusing to repent of any
self acknowledged practice which the confessions call sin shall
not be ordained and/or installed as deacons, elders, or ministers
of the Word and Sacrament. Those who are called to ordained
service in the church, by their assent to the constitutional
questions for ordination and installation (W-4.4003), pledge
themselves to live lives obedient to Jesus Christ the Head of
the Church, striving to follow where he leads through the witness
of the Scriptures, and to understand the Scriptures through
the instruction of the Confessions. In so doing, they declare
their fidelity to the standards of the Church. Each governing
body charged with examination for ordination and/or installation
(G-14.0240 and G-14.0450) establishes the candidates sincere
efforts to adhere to these standards. |

"Amendment
01-A" If adopted by a majority (87) of the 173 presbyteries,
it would have removed G-6.0106b ("Amendment B"). It failed
(42 yes - 127 no) |
| |
"Amendment
A" (97-A) was the attempt in 97/98 to remove G-6.0106b
again from the Book of Order. It failed (57 yes - 114 no) |
| |
"Amendment
B" (96-B), the fidelity & chastity requirement
for ordained church officers, was adopted in 96/97 (97 yes - 74 no)
and is now part of the Book of Order as G-6.0106b:
"Those who are called to office in the church are to lead
a life in obedience to Scripture and in conformity to the historic
confessional standards of the church. Among these standards is the
requirement to live either in fidelity within the covenant of marriage
between a man and a woman (W-4.9001), or chastity in singleness. Persons
refusing to repent of any self-acknowledged practice which the confessions
call sin shall not be ordained and/or installed as deacons, elders,
or ministers of the Word and Sacrament." |

The
pairs of numbers detailing voting results always have the affirmative
vote first |
| |
The
result of the vote in presbyteries is determined by "a majority
of the votes cast." Only "yes" and "no"
votes (or similar wordings) are valid; all other votes (including
"no action" and "abstention") are not valid and
should not be counted among the "votes cast".
However, if a presbytery votes to take "no action" on this
amendment, the vote will be recorded here as a negative one, since
each amendment needs an affirmative vote of a majority of all 173
presbyteries for its adoption (87 affirmative votes), and therefore
in this case "no action" has the same effect as voting "no". |
